Driving to Florida

Drove down a very windy, very rough I-95 thru Georgia (added SC-701 to our list of “roads to avoid”).  Stopped at a Florida Welcome Center for a map and a SunPass toll transponder.  Continued down I-95 to just south of Daytona Beach where we got onto I-4.  Picked up a rental car at Hertz Sanford, then cross-country to Eustis and the Southern Palms RV resort.  There probably are 1000 RV sites in this place.  Ours is on a corner with cable TV and usual services.

@Ft Stewart.  We drove the coach to Ft Pulaski, a Civil War fort where Union rifled shells heralded the end of masonry forts.  Bombardment was from Tybee Island, well beyond the range of the Confederate smooth bore cannon.  Drove to Tybee Island and ate lunch at grill.  Walked down the beach.  Found our way to the Ft Stewart Xchange, then Walmart, as Deb’s tablet had died.  Bought a new Samsung at Walmart.  Dinner was andouille sausage, onions and tomato.

Heard reveille at 7am, and we slept on!  Rose about 9am.  Coffee and toast.  Made all preps for getting underway.  Drove to Ft Stewart, which is the biggest base we’ve ever been on.  Along the way, Lenscrafters called saying glasses were at Southpoint.  We asked them to ship them to a Lenscrafters at Sanford FL.  The campground is truly in the woods, accessed by driving the dam containing Holbrook Pond.  Cell coverage was poor (turned out to be a massive outage on the east coast) but the Wi-Fi was good enough for Wi-Fi calling.  We rode our bicycles around the campground a bit.  Chatted with a female SK1 (retired).  Butter chicken curry.

Stayed home all day except for an excursion to the Base PX.  Returned rental car in afternoon.  Watched Super Bowl, ate chips and dip.

At Joint Base Charleston

Jim felt well on waking.  He joined the AuxComm video chat.  Went over to the golf course and had a nice round.  Deb went to a cross-stitch shop in Summerville SC.  Filet mignon and broccoli using the LP grill.

Jim woke feeling much better, having slept most of the previous 24 hours.  We broke camp and drove to Unique Customizations (2737 Punk Rd, Little River SC) to see the Truma tech.  He/ Josh, is an active duty/ reserve veteran trying to get to retirement, while running his own RV repair shop.  Huge three bay building, lots of tools and clear expertise.  He jiggled and reseated several wires/ harnesses on the Truma and it began working again.  Yay!  Hot water!  One minute of work, and Jim gave Josh $20.

We continued our way toward Joint Base Charleston.  Rt 701 is 50 miles of bad road … corrugation and pot holes.  Better once we got back on US 17.  We stopped at a Subway in Georgetown for lunch about 2pm, missing the historic downtown.  Server/ GM Martrice was perky and the Califresh sub was great!  Gate clearance at JB Chas was ID check only.  MWR only takes VISA!  We registered, then drove to the Xchange/ commissary/ Class 6 store on base for supplies before actually heading to our site. Site 17 at the campsite is fine, the SFC (ret) camp host was helpful.  Advice from the Outdoor Rec Office is that the coach is not a good bet for driving into Charleston proper, so we rented an Enterprise Corolla from the commercial airport about seven miles away.  Back to the camp site.  Salmon and green beans for dinner, then catching up on receipts, travelogue and email.  Hearing lots of big jets from both mil/ civ bases.

Jim awoke feeling poorly, with a stomach bug that produced the usual GI symptoms.  He spent most of the day sipping water and sleeping.  In the morning we spent a lot of time finding someone who could take a technical look at the tankless heater, finding someone we could drive to the next day.  We did take the bikes out for a spin in the afternoon, proving to Debbi that she needs to build some muscle.  We walked most of the way back on that bike excursion.  After sleeping a little, Jim was better, but relapsed and fell asleep.  Deb kindly did laundry occasioned by the GI symptoms; only 75 cents each for the washer and dryer.  Jim slept.

Away for a shakedown cruise!

Got away at 1030, stopped for Chik-fil-A in Cary.    Interesting drive to Wilmington and then Ft Fisher, getting our sea legs under us.  Ft. Fisher is an open campground, nice cement pads, very few campers.  Bathhouse and showers.  We discovered that the tankless hot water heater in the coach would not ignite, so no hot water.  Facebook technicians were no help.  Deb cooked shrimp and we went to sleep.

New genealogy wiki

I’ve decided to move my burgeoning table of genealogy links into a wiki, which will make searching and organizing easier. In the next few days, I’ll move all the links to https://fh.creeksidefarm.org, where I’ll add new ones as I go. I’ll copy interesting information from my genealogy presentations there, too.
